Today, Microsoft will roll out the latest version of its Windows Phone software for all users, after earlier releasing the developer preview. Windows Phone 8.1 is probably the most-anticipated update in the history of Microsoft’s operating system for smartphones. The OS adds several essential features such as a notification centre, greater start screen personalisation, Skype integration and even a keyboard that lets you swipe to type.

In April this year, Microsoft had unveiled Windows Phone 8.1 and its desktop counterpart Windows 8.1, promising several new features, bringing the platform on par with Android and iOS in terms of functionality. The update also adds a smart voice assistant called Cortana, but this feature isn’t available in India yet.

Microsoft had announced that the update would be rolled out to all Windows Phone 8.0 smartphones on June 24. Since the announcement, smartphones such as the Lumia 630 and Micromax Canvas Win have been launched with Windows Phone 8.1.

Before you get to downloading the update, you should check which version of Windows Phone your device is running.

To do that, open Settings > about. Here you will see the OS version under phone information. If it is Windows Phone 8.0, your phone should be getting the 8.1 update. Before updating, ensure that your phone has sufficient battery life. We recommend that you update while charging your phone to make sure that it updates without a hitch. Here’s how to get the latest Windows Phone 8.1 update on your smartphone.

1) Open Settings, scroll down and tap the “Phone update” option.

2) Now tap “Check for updates”. Your Windows Phone device will now check if the new update is available. You can download the update if it is available.

3) Alternatively, you may tick the option below check for updates, which reads: Automatically download updates if my data settings allow it. This way, your phone will update software automatically as long as you are on a WiFi connection.

If your phone doesn’t show any updates available, you’ll have to wait a while longer. The review note on Microsoft’s support site reads, “The distribution of these incremental updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone, and installation will require that your phone have any prior updates. Update availability will also vary by country, region, and hardware capabilities.” Alternatively, you may download the developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 to get a taste of the OS before it is officially available for your smartphone. 0 12 reports that there has been reports from several sources that Microsoft is currently pushing out the official Windows Phone 8.1/Nokia Cyan update to Nokia Lumia 625 handsets.

The update is being delivered over the air, and upgrades these devices to OS version 8.10.12397.895 which is also the latest version of the WP8.1 Developer preview.

The official update appears to be popping up rather haphazardly around the world, and we hope our locale and handset is the next to strike it lucky.

WindowsBlogItalia has found a new render of the recently leaked Nokia Lumia 830.

While we have not seen enough high quality pictures yet to verify that the handset is actually real, the render does offer some more information than the earlier leaks, including that the handset will have a 13 megapixel Pureview camera with Carl Zeiss lenses.

It also suggests  that the “NOKIA by Microsoft” branding rumour from evLeaks is in fact real.

Of course a render can never be seen as confirmation of anything, given that anyone with just a bit of skill can knock one up easily, so I will file this under tantalizing for now.

WindowsPhone8‬.1 will NOT be released on June 24 as many websites have misinterpreted it. June 24 is the date Support Lifecycle starts for Windows Phone 8.1 and it ends on July 11, 2017. This date got nothing to do with the release of the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

Windows Phone 8.1 will start rolling out this month starting with the high end devices like the Lumia 1520, Lumia 1020, Lumia 920, etc. and then for other devices like Lumia 720, Lumia 520, etc. The exact date of release is different for each country and phone model.
It might release even before June 24, it could be as early as next week!

Reports suggest that the next Windows Phone 8.1 GDRI update is already in ‘dogfooding’ testing phase.

Windows Phone 8.1 has been barely rolled out officially, but according to reports, Microsoft is already working on Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 (General Distribution Release) update that is likely to launch sometime this Summer or early Fall alongside new hardware, followed by GDR2 in 2014 end.

Microsoft is doing internal testing of Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1. According to these reports, Microsoft’s own developers are in the latter phases of internal testing. The phase called “dogfooding,” is where Microsoft’s own developers are using the platform on their own devices and are preparing for a release later this year. As of yet, there is no information available about the various enhancements that are going to be incorporated with this update.

The next update to Windows, which would be called either Windows 8.2 or Windows 8.1 Update 2 is also getting close to release. Previous rumors suggest that Windows 8.2 will reach RTM in July and it may be released in August or September this year.

Further, Microsoft Windows 9 is also being shared across more divisions within the company and the development team is “on track” for a release in 2015. A recently leaked official document posted by Myce, states that Microsoft is planning preview releases for both Windows 9 and Windows Phone 9 in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. Earlier rumors have hinted that Windows 9 may be released at the next Microsoft Build Developers’ Conference in April 2015.
