In August 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope recorded a 72-second narrowband signal from Sagittarius that has never been explained.

On the night of August 15, 1977, astronomer Jerry R. Ehman circled the alphanumeric sequence “6EQUJ5” on a computer printout and wrote “Wow!” in red ink. More than four decades later, the signal from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius remains one of the most compelling anomalies in SETI history.
